Arendt wrote the essay in German, and an unknown translator rendered the English version. This translator used widely available translations of Heine’s and Kafka’s work, and translated Bernard Lazare’s texts (which remain unpublished in English translation). In the annotations, we provide references to standard German editions of Heine and Kafka and to Lazare’s texts.
